Responsibilities:
Parsons Paris, a branch campus of The New School and Parsons The New School for Design, seeks applicants for a full-time faculty position.

Applicants should demonstrate expertise in the practice and theory of strategic management in the context of design-driven businesses, with preference being given to applicants with innovative research, doctoral-level work or significant professional experience in one or more of the following areas: business, brand strategy, entrepreneurship, new economies and alternate business practices, design business, design research, design thinking, marketing and public relations, service design, social media, social practice and innovation, incubator models, and sustainable design. Successful applicants will teach primarily in both the undergraduate BBA in Strategic Design and Management program and the MS in Strategic Design and Management (to open in fall 2014, and on which the faculty will play a key role.) Candidates must be innovative in their pedagogical approaches to activating students' interest in the relationship between theory and practice, and be forward-thinking about what knowledge, skills and literacies are now required to adeptly respond to complex 21st-century global challenges. Experience with online learning platforms is preferred.

Parsons Paris is looking for creative and innovative practitioners with a clear understanding of the social, cultural, environmental, political and institutional issues that have shaped contemporary design practices and discourses, and those that will determine futures of the professional design practice. In addition, we seek candidates with a strongly demonstrated, integrative experience in the theory and practice of Strategic Design and Management.

The full-time faculty will teach 5 courses or equivalent per academic year. The faculty is expected to serve as coordinator of the Strategic Design and Management courses, faculty, and external partnerships, in collaboration with the Dean of Parsons Paris. S/he is expected to pursue their own research and/or projects and participate in academic committees devoted to curriculum development and governance, and to hold regular office hours, and participate in extracurricular activities on a regular basis (e.g., critiques, review panels, thesis supervision, independent study, committees, etc.). According to previous experience, s/he will assume service and leadership roles that may include: chairing committees, participating in Parsons Paris-wide task forces, mentoring junior faculty members or assuming directorship of a program. If the candidate has such prior experiences, it is expected that the successful applicant demonstrates a record of leadership in an academic setting.

Minimum Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have:

  • A terminal graduate degree or demonstrated equivalence in management, marketing and/or business.
  • Active/current professional practice or experimental creative/critical scholarship.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: strategic management, global and local production systems, organizational theory, change management, social entrepreneurship, business strategy, research and development and/or innovation.
  • A thorough understanding of the relations between design and management in a global context of broader social, cultural, political, economic, environmental, scientific and technological forces (an engagement with the contemporary aspects of globalization and sustainability is preferred).
  • More than 5 years of teaching experience at university level, possibly also as part of the candidates doctoral studies, coupled with a proven track record of working well with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, education, and professional training.
  • Interest in developing serious critical, historical, and theoretical discussions around the design and management nexus in the classroom/studio.
  • Ability to develop and nurture individual students' strategic management abilities, and a strong commitment to progressive management and business education.
  • Administrative skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively.
  • An interest in working collaboratively within Parsons, across the University, and with external partners towards the development of shared projects and initiatives.
  • Fluency in English and French required.
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills in English and French.
  • Citizenship of a European Union country is required.
