LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE - The only thing missing from the Monrovia High School football team's resume the past two years was a signature victory over an upper-division team.

Not anymore.

Deshawn Potts scored two touchdowns and David Gallegos recovered a St. Francis fumble on the Wildcats 1 with just over a minute to play and Monrovia got its milestone win with a 17-13 victory over St. Francis on Friday in a nonleague game at Friedman Field.

Monrovia, which also got 176 yards rushing from Ge Vontray Ainsworth, improved to 3-2.

St. Francis, which got 177 yards passing from Jared Lebowitz and 71 yards rushing and a touchdown from Daniel Kawamura, slipped to 3-2.

"We expect (to win)," said Monrovia coach Ryan Maddox, whose Wildcats have won the past two CIF-Southern Section Mid-Valley Division titles. "That's what we expect, that's what we're about. We want to play the best. I'm just real proud of the kids and the way they played tonight."

But St. Francis, which led 13-10 at halftime, nearly stole it away.

Lebowitz had completions of 19, 21 and 14 yards to drive the Golden Knights from their 35 to the Wildcats1. The final toss to John Carroll came on fourth-and-3 from the 15.

But on the next play, Lebowitz fumbled the

snap, and Gallegos fell on it to preserve the victory.

"We showed what our defense is made out of," Gallegos said. "We just tried to stop them. We knew they were going to run up the middle, we just covered our end.

"I saw the ball there, and I just took it. I was so hyped."

Monrovia, which held St. Francis to 232 yards, took a 17-13 lead when Kawamura fumbled and Potts returned it for a score with 9:01 left in the third quarter.

The first half was all about big plays, and St. Francis one-upped Monrovia for a 13-10 advantage.

St. Francis, which nearly rallied from a two-touchdown deficit before losing to La Mirada two weeks ago, made it 10-6 on 26-yard field goal by Mark Verso before using a 48-yard drive to take the lead.

Kawamura grabbed a 26-yard pass from Lebowitz to the Monrovia 21 before scoring from the 3 for a 13-10 advantage with 3:22 left in the half.

Chad Waterbury - Building Muslce with High Reps

Lifting heavy weights for moderate reps (3-6) is one of the best ways to build muscle. In fact, one of the best programs I have ever done featured one core lift in each of four sessions (Monday: deadlift, Tuesday: bench press or weighted dips, Thursday: front squats, Friday: bent rows or weighted pull ups) at the beginning of the session, for 10 sets of 3 reps. The other two or three exercises in each session were assistance work.

But lifting heavy is hard on the joints, and it's also hard on the neurological system - it takes a lot of energy to make the nerves fire all of the muscle fibers needed to lift heavy weights. Too much fatigue leads to injury. We can't work out if we are injured - the goal is health and fitness.

So sometimes it's a god idea to lift lighter weights for higher reps. In this post from his blog, Chad Waterbury offers some good guidelines for using higher reps and still building muscle.

What?s the best rep range to build muscle? That?s a question many of you have probably pondered over the years, especially if you?re wanting to know how to get ripped. Most people do 8-12 reps per set for maximum growth. However, heavier weights can build just as much muscle, if there?s enough volume. Three sets of three reps (3?3) won?t add much mass, but 10 sets of three reps (10?3) definitely will.

So what about high rep training? Can it build just as much muscle?

I love heavy lifting as much as the next guy, but there are times when your joints need a break and your muscles need a different type of stimulus to accelerate growth. High rep training can be the path to new muscle, if you adhere to the following four steps:

1. Take each set to failure: I?m not a big fan of training to failure; however, when training with light weights it?s necessary to take each set to the point of exhaustion. With heavier loads (eg, 4-6 rep max) you can get away with avoiding failure because the load is heavy enough to recruit your largest motor units, even if you don?t reach failure.

For muscle growth, the motor units must be fatigued. If you can do 25 push-ups but you stop that set at 19 or 20 reps, there won?t be enough fatigue to stimulate growth through an increase in protein synthesis. Research by Burd, et al (2010) shows that training with light loads (30% of max) can result in the same level of increased protein synthesis as heavy loads (90% of max), provided you take those high rep sets to failure.

Training to ?failure? can mean different things to different people. My definition: when you can no longer achieve a full range of motion rep with perfect form you?ve reached failure. Don?t push beyond that point.

2. Choose the right exercises for high rep training: There are certain strength exercises that should never be taken to failure: squat, deadlift, and Olympic lifts. The risk of taking any of those exercises to failure far outweighs the potential benefit, and this is especially true with high rep sets that accumulate a huge amount of fatigue.?As a rule, stick to high rep training to failure for upper body lifts and single leg lower body exercises.

A few of my favorite exercises to train to failure with high reps are: push-up, pull-up, handstand push-up, lunge, standing calf raise, and single-leg hip thrust.

3. Don?t go too light: You could curl a soup can all day long and it won?t add muscle to your biceps. When the load is too light it?s impossible to recruit and fatigue the motor units that are large enough to result in visible growth.

As a general rule, stick to loads that allow 20-30 reps for your first set for your high rep workouts. If you can any more than that, the load isn?t ideal for growth. From there, keep cranking out sets of as many reps as you can with that same load until you reach a target number of total reps (eg, 50 reps for that muscle group).

4. Get the most out of each rep: When training with light loads, the speed and tension you develop in each rep becomes paramount. If you purposely slow down the concentric (muscle shortening) phase, you?ll leave the larger motor units untapped. And when the muscle group is maximally shortened, that peak contraction should be squeezed briefly to build extra tension. With that extra tension comes extra muscle growth because you?ll recruit more motor units.

Bottom line for tempo: the shortening (concentric) phase should be fast, followed by a brief but intense squeeze of the muscle, and then do the lengthening (eccentric) phase under control.

When you do high rep training the right way, you can build new muscle and train more frequently because it?s less stressful to the central nervous system (CNS) and joints. That?s why there are many body weight exercises in my new book, High Frequency Training. Coming October 16!

(AP) ? Afghan Army Sgt. Habibullah Hayar didn't know it, but he had been sleeping with his enemy for weeks.

Twenty days ago, one of his roommates was arrested for allegedly plotting an insider attack against their unit, which is partnered with NATO forces in eastern Paktia province.

Afghan soldiers and policemen ? or militants in their uniforms ? have gunned down more than 50 foreign troops so far this year, eroding the trust between coalition forces and their Afghan partners. An equal number of Afghan policemen and soldiers also died in these attacks, giving them reason as well to be suspicious of possible infiltrators within their ranks.

"It's not only foreigners. They are targeting Afghan security forces too," said the 21-year-old Hayar, who was in Kabul on leave. "Sometimes, I think what kind of situation is this that a Muslim cannot trust a Muslim ? even a brother cannot trust a brother. It's so confused. Nobody knows what's going on."

The attacks are taking a toll on the partnership, prompting the U.S. military to restrict operations with small-sized Afghan units earlier this month.

The close contact ? with coalition forces working side by side with Afghan troops as advisers, mentors and trainers ? is a key part of the U.S. strategy for putting the Afghans in the lead as the U.S. and other nations prepare to pull out their last combat troops at the end of 2014, just 27 months away.

The U.S. military also has shown increasing anger over the attacks.

"I'm mad as hell about them, to be honest with you," Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, told CBS' "60 Minutes" in an interview scheduled to be broadcast on Sunday. "It reverberates everywhere across the United States. You know, we're willing to sacrifice a lot for this campaign, but we're not willing to be murdered for it."

So far this year, 51 foreign troops ? at least half of them Americans ? have been killed in insider attacks. The Afghan government has not provided statistics on the number of its forces killed in insider attacks. However, U.S. military statistics obtained by The Associated Press show at least 53 members of the Afghan security forces had been killed as of the end of August.

A U.S. military official disclosed the numbers on condition of anonymity because he said it was up to Afghan officials to formally release the figures. An Afghan defense official who was shown the statistics said he had no reason to doubt their accuracy.

Overall, the statistics show that at least 135 Afghan policemen and soldiers have been killed in insider attacks since 2007. That's more than the 118 foreign service members ? mostly Americans ? killed in such attacks since then, according to NATO.

Typically, foreign troops are the main targets, but Afghan forces also have been killed by comrades angry over their collaboration with Westerners and many more get killed in the crossfire, Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi said. He said the ministry did not have a breakdown of how many had been targeted or killed in gunbattles during the attacks.

In at least one instance, an Afghan police officer with alleged ties to militants, killed 10 of his fellow officers on Aug. 11 at a checkpoint in southwestern Nimroz province. An Afghan soldier also was killed on April 25 when a fellow soldier opened fire on a U.S. service member and his translator in Kandahar province, the southern birthplace of the Taliban.

Last year, a suicide bomber in an Afghan police uniform blew himself up May 28 in Takhar province, killing two NATO service members and four Afghans, including a senior police commander. And just a week before that, four Taliban fighters wearing suicide vests under police uniforms attacked a government building in Khost province, triggering a gunbattle that left three Afghan policemen and two Afghan soldiers dead. On April 16, an Afghan soldier walked into a meeting of NATO trainers and Afghan troops in Laghman province, blew himself up, killing five U.S. troops, four Afghan soldiers and an interpreter.

"It's difficult to know an attacker from a non-attacker when everybody is wearing a uniform, Hayar said.

The attacker was one of seven people rounded up earlier this month from various units within the Afghan National Army Corps 203, Hayar said. The corps covers the eastern Afghan provinces of Paktia, Paktika, Ghazni, Wardak, Logar and Khost.

"He was together with me in my room with some of my other colleagues. He had a long beard. We didn't know anything about him. We were living together, sleeping together," said Hayar, who has been in the Afghan army for 2 1/2 years.

He said the suspected infiltrator was identified after a Taliban militant arrested in Logar told his Afghan interrogators that members of the fundamentalist Islamic movement had infiltrated the corps and were planning imminent attacks. That prompted Hayar's superiors to start questioning soldiers in various units.

Hayar said his roommate's uneasy reaction raised suspicion, and investigators found Taliban songs saved to the memory card of his cell phone. He was then detained by Afghan intelligence officials and confessed he was a member of the Taliban and planned to stage attacks.

Hayar says he assumes his former bunkmate was probably going after foreign forces, but it makes him uncomfortable nevertheless.

"It's very hard to trust anybody ? even a roommate," he said. "Whenever I'm not on duty, I lock my weapon and keep the key myself. I don't put my weapon under my pillow to sleep because maybe someone will grab it and shoot me with my own weapon."

To counter such attacks, the U.S. military earlier this year stopped training about 1,000 members of the Afghan Local Police, a controversial network of village-defense units. U.S. commanders have assigned some troops to be "guardian angels" who watch over their comrades even as they sleep. U.S. officials also recently ordered American troops to carry loaded weapons at all time, even when they are on their bases.

Then, after a string of insider attacks, Allen this month restricted operations carried out alongside with small-sized Afghan units. Coalition troops have routinely conducted patrols or manned outposts with small groups of Afghan counterparts, but Allen's directive said such operations would no longer be considered routine and required the approval of the regional commander.

For their part, Afghan authorities have detained or removed hundreds of soldiers as part of its effort to re-screen its security forces. The Ministry of Defense also released a 28-page training booklet this month that advises soldiers not to be personally offended when foreign troops do things Afghans view as deeply insulting.

The booklet urges them not to take revenge for foreign troops' social blunders, such as blowing their noses in public, stepping into a mosque with their shoes on, walking in front of a soldier who is praying or asking about their wives.

"Most of the coalition members are interested to share pictures of their families. It is not a big deal for them. If someone asks you about your family, especially the females in your family, don't think they are disrespecting you or trying to insult you," the booklet says.

"That is not the case. By asking such questions, they are trying to show that they want to learn more about you. You can very easily explain to them that nobody in Afghanistan would ask, especially about wives or females in the family."

Third person dead from Venezuela election shooting: Capriles

A nation inured to wanton murder was nevertheless shocked by this one: In November 2010, a group of four young men milling about as a party ended attacked another teen, randomly picking him as the victim of their vicious assault. Bobby Tillman, 18, did nothing to provoke his assailants to knock him to the ground and kick and stomp him to death. The crime occurred outside a suburban Atlanta home after parents called a halt to a teen party that had gotten out of control. This was no beating by members of a rival gang, no attack set off by longstanding grudges or old misunderstandings. ...

Oil posts 8.5 pct gain for quarter; gas at $3.79

NEW YORK (AP) ? Oil ended the third quarter with a slight gain as investors weighed whether the world economy could pull out of the doldrums.

Benchmark oil rose 34 cents to $92.19 per barrel in morning trading in New York. In London, Brent crude, which reflects what most U.S. refineries have to pay for oil, rose 38 cents to $112.39.

That marks a quiet finish to a quarter in which oil had a dramatic impact on prices at the gas pump and on some sectors of the stock market. Oil gained 8.5 percent during the third quarter, and is up 18.7 percent from the year low hit on June 28. Gasoline prices rose 14 percent to an average of $3.79 per gallon, a record for late September.

Traders will enter the final quarter of the year with many of the same questions that hung over the market for the last three months: Will world oil demand get weaker? Or will stimulus measures from central banks in the U.S., China, Europe and Japan boost economic growth and oil demand? And could tensions between Iran and the West lead to a war that could disrupt supplies?

Economies around the globe are using less oil than expected as they struggle to grow. When economies slow, demand for oil falls because people travel less and ship fewer goods. Meanwhile, supply has been ample thanks to big increases in production from the U.S. and elsewhere.

But two factors have kept oil prices relatively high: Economic stimulus programs from the world's central banks and fears that a military conflict with Iran could disrupt oil supplies.

Enthusiasm for stimulus measures briefly pushed oil over $100 for the only time during the quarter in mid-September. But the reality of the world's economic weakness seemed to settle in and oil fell about $7 per barrel in the past two weeks.

"We expect the focus to return to the deterioration in underlying economic and financial conditions that made the additional stimulus necessary in the first place," said Julian Jessop, chief global economist at Capital Economics in a report Friday.

Conditions in Spain are a reminder that Europe is still in financial crisis. Many think Spain will seek help from the European Central Bank after announcing a round of severe budget cuts on Thursday.

Tensions between Iran and the West over Iran's nuclear program have been heating up for months. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested this week that Iran could have enough enriched uranium to build a nuclear bomb by next summer. To some analysts, his speech suggested no military action is imminent.

"The announcement likely reduces the near-term threat of war," wrote RW Baird analyst Michael Hall in a research note.

The effect of high oil prices were reflected in the stock market during the quarter. Energy was the best performer of the 10 sectors in the S&P 500 stock index. Chevron Corp. shares hit an all-time high of $118.53 and Exxon Mobil Corp. shares reached $92.57, the highest level since May of 2008. But airline stocks had a rough quarter because jet fuel prices rose. Shares of United Continental Holdings Inc. and Delta Air Lines Inc., the nation's two biggest airlines, fell 20 percent and 16 percent, respectively.

And higher oil prices made trips to the gas station more expensive as the summer progressed. Drivers saw prices rise nearly 50 cents per gallon from early July to late September.

The national average retail price was $3.79 per gallon Friday, according to AAA, OPIS and Wright Express. That's down about a penny for the day, but it's 32 cents higher than this time last year and highest ever for this time of year.

The lowest point for crude oil and retail gasoline prices was at the beginning of the quarter, on July 2, when crude closed at $83.75 per barrel and drivers were paying $3.33 at the pump. Stimulus programs and refinery closures in the U.S. caused by technical problems and Hurricane Isaac pushed prices up from there. On Sept. 14, oil traded over $100 briefly before settling at its high for the quarter of $99 per barrel. Retail gasoline hit its high for the quarter that day too, at $3.87 per gallon.

The quarterly average prices for oil and gasoline were little changed from last year. The price at the pump averaged $3.64 per gallon, just 2 cents higher than last year's third quarter. The average was 7 cents lower than during this year's April to June quarter when gas hit its high for the year of $3.94.

Crude oil averaged $92.09 per gallon, 3 percent higher on average than last year's third quarter.

Natural gas hit its high for the quarter ? and the year ? on Friday. Earlier in the year traders were concerned that a surplus from last year's warm winter and increased domestic production would fill up storage facilities and send prices toward zero. But a blistering hot summer increased demand for gas to generate electricity for cooling and forecasters predict a more normal winter.

Natural gas rose 2.3 cents to $3.32 per thousand cubic feet Friday. For the quarter, natural gas averaged $2.88 per thousand cubic feet, which was 29 percent lower than the average price for last year's third quarter, but 23 percent higher than the April-to-June period this year.

In other energy trading:

? Heating oil rose 1.2 cents to $3.17 per gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline gained 2.3 cents to $2.92 per gallon.

Heating Cooling Service News Blog rooftop vs ground level cooling ...

it is tune-up season for cooling systems across the chicagoland area, and many houtilize owners are calling in to have this service performed by chicago warmther repair. we almethod s ask each consumerthe location of their air conditioning condenser, and many respond with confusion. most people have only ever seen a residential air conditioning condenser on ground level, and are astonished to hear that some people actually have this portion of the system on the rooftop of their houtilize . in the town of chicago, placing the cooling system on the rooftop of a houtilize has become very popular, and we thought we would share with you some of the pros and cons of having your next cooling system placed on the roof of the houtilize as well.

why you should have a rooftop a/c

  • security: when an air conditioner is placed on a rooftop, it is safe from all kinds of vandalism and thievery. every summer, hundreds of air conditioning machines in the chicagoland area are stolen and scrapped for parts, and placing the machine up on the roof, protects it from the sticky hands of burglars.
  • safe from damage: every year, we get calls from houtilize owners that nicked their refrigerant lines with a weed whacker or lawn mower, and subsequently lost all of the refrigerant within the system. nowadays they have a giant repair to deal with, and it all could be prevented if the machine was placed on the roof.
  • backyard silence: noisy condensers are very normal, and if you have had one or if you have a neighbor with one, you knowadays how annoying the excess noise can be. a rooftop cooling system is far enough amethod that silence can be restored to your backyard space.
  • additional space: in the town, each houtilize is crammed close to the next, and backyard space is scarce at best. the average cooling system requirements about 6 square feet of space when put ined, and when you have only a small space available, 6 feet could mean a lot. placing the machine up on the roof frees that space for additional backyard activities.
  • cleaner systems: rooftop machines are consistently cleaner than ground level machines. although they should still have their annual tune-up to keep peek efficiency, these machines are not exposed to the same levels of dust, dirt, and additional airborne debris that ground machines take in daily.

why you should not have a rooftop a/c

  • challenging tune-up: the giantgest hitch with rooftop machines is access. if you have stairwell access to the system the hitch isn?t as bad, but sometimes you will need to have a ladder. four seasons servicemans carry 40 ft ladders on their trucks in order to access these systems. also, water spigot access is limited on a rooftop.
  • system neglect: when you have your cooling system located on the roof, it is easy to forget to schedule your annual tune-up. a ground level system sits in your backyard as a constant reminder of the need for tune-up, and neglecting the system could lead to unwanted stop workingures and high energy costs.

as you can see, there are defiantly more pros than cons when it comes to a comparison between ground and rooftop air conditioning machines. so, the next time you need your cooling system substitute d, think about the possibility of moving the machine to the roof and think about four seasons for your put ination!

Daily Fitness For Health: Ryan Reynolds: Buried with Fitness Phobia

One of fitness.com's most fit celebrities that we just can't get enough of, has to be Ryan Reynolds.? So, what can we not help but bring you?? More information on this hot muscle ...

Lately you could find Ryan?Reynolds.....or could you? Reynolds just finished filming one of the greatest suspense movies he has ever played a role in, where he spent the majority of the time cooped up in a wooden coffin. The film is called "Buried", and the story is about a man (played by Reynolds) who is a United States truck driver in Iraq, that gets himself trapped in a coffin. All he has access to in the outside world while being trapped in the coffin is a cell phone and a lighter.

Reynolds says the role took an incredible toll on him both physically, and emotionally. He says it was an experience unlike no other. It really brought the reality of war to him, and he said that for him "the scars and things, are just spoils of war." After spending 17 hours in the coffin, Reynolds may have come out of the box with a lot of bruises, scrapes, and even a little bald patch; but Reynolds calls his physical injuries from the film making "souvenirs."

As for his mental health, which may have suffered more than his physical; he found it hard to get back into the normal routine of every day life without feeling the jitters. Since being stuck for 17 days straight while filming, Reynolds claims that he had more anxiety and sense of panic than he had ever felt before, and had a lot of trouble sleeping at night throughout the duration of the film.

However, since the making of the film, Reynolds has tried to find peace again at home after a failed attempt to vacation on a beach. He said the sand was just a reminder of the box he had been in while filming (which was full of sand), so he found himself on the next flight home.

Possible Defenses to a DUI Charge | Criminal Defence Blawg

(US criminal law) Driving under the influence is a serious crime. There are few defenses to a charge of driving under the influence, and anyone accused of driving under the influence should contact a local attorney to discuss his or her options. Most allegations of driving under the influence include officer testimony regarding specific behaviors demonstrated by the defendant, roadside sobriety test results, and blood or breathalyzer tests.

Officer Testimony

Attacking the officer?s perceptions will be difficult, but it will be part of any trial. Officers are trained to detect behaviors and mannerisms consistent with intoxication, and that training is usually sound. Disproving the officers? statements will be challenging. It may be possible to attribute some of the specific observations to specific causes. Fatigue or allergies can cause bloodshot eyes, individuals may speak with a lisp, and people can be generally clumsy.Fortunately, proving a charge for driving while intoxicated usually requires additional evidence beyond officer testimony.Road Side Sobriety Test Result

Sobriety tests require strong skills of dexterity and coordination. Under the ordinary stresses of a traffic stop, failing these tests is probable, even for sober individuals. Sobriety tests are rife with opportunities to err, and they exist to give the officer probable cause to arrest individuals for driving under the influence.

Refusal to take a field sobriety test will often lead to an arrest, as officers typically only ask motorists to reinforce what they already believe. However, according to our?DUI attorney in Montgomery County Pennsylvania, it may also prevent the officer from having probable cause to file charges or obtain a conviction.

Blood and Breath Tests

Defective equipment or alcohol absorption patterns can affect the results. Improperly calibrated or defective machinery can produce incorrect readings, but this is rarely an issue. More frequently, attorneys allege that the results are misleading due to the nature of alcohol. This may be the best defense against a charge of driving under the influence.

  • Decreasing Intoxication:? Breathalyzers detect the concentration of alcohol in the test subject?s mouth. Within a short time, individuals who consume alcohol will have elevated quantities of alcohol in their mouths. This can occur even if the alcohol has not been absorbed into the bloodstream. If the breathalyzer is given shortly after an individual consumes alcohol, the breathalyzer will mistakenly indicate that the individual possesses a high blood alcohol content. The individual may not be intoxicated at the time that he or she is driving.
  • Increasing Intoxication:? Increasing intoxication can also be an issue. The presence of food, water, or other items in an individual?s stomach can affect the absorption of alcohol. As the alcohol is absorbed, the individual?s blood alcohol content will rise. Drivers with low concentrations of alcohol while driving can produce higher results after a lengthy traffic stop or ride to the police station. Many attorneys will argue that their clients were not intoxicated while operating a motor vehicle and that the alcohol was absorbed after the motorist was stopped.

Fighting a charge of driving under the influence may be possible. Officers may incorrectly assess a suspect?s mannerisms, those individuals may be unable to complete the field sobriety tests, and rising or declining intoxication can provoke misleading results from equipment. It is imperative that anyone charged with driving under the influence retain an attorney.

Daily Kos: The Strength of Democratic Values

Warning: This scene contains a graphic description of military death.

It was during a one-day mission to destroy a supply route that he chanced upon an American soldier suspended from a tall tree. The Viet Cong, who had hung him by his feet, had made a long incision across his back, pulling his intestines through the opening to inflict a slow and painful death.

The G.I. pleaded with James to kill him. He knew he was dying, and he told James a speedy death would be more merciful than a quick call for help. But James balked. How could he kill a fellow American? The two soldiers quarreled for a long time, but eventually the dying man triumphed by forcing James to acknowledge that a rescue operation would take longer to plan and implement than it would take for him to suffer an agonizing death.

When at last, the soldier screamed out in pain, James unholstered his pistol and put a bullet through his head.

He never knew the man?s name, but he never forgot his face. Even in his sleep.

James's assignment ended shortly after that.

A day after suffering a gunshot wound to his shoulder, he was ordered to return to the United States. It was only then, in the country where he had been born and raised that he sustained the most painful wound to be inflicted during his short stint in the military: he discovered the country that he had loved since birth had deserted him.

He did not recognize America. Attitudes had changed, and when his airplane touched down at Langley Air Force Base, he learned that two days earlier, four students had been killed by National Guardsmen at Kent State. He had come home to a deeply divided country during a time of great upheaval.

There were no parades. No one extended a hand of gratitude for his service.

Several days later, when he was discharged from the military and transported to DFW Airport, no one from the military was there to greet him; no one from the government felt it important enough to see that he received adequate treatment for the wounds he had suffered to his soul.

The message was clear: he was on his own.

It would take over twenty years before Congress would enact a comprehensive piece of legislation to treat the memories that haunted him.

But unfortunately, the help he needed came too late.

When he tried to resume civilian life, he found his mind didn?t function the same way it had before he had enlisted. He was restless, and he couldn?t concentrate. Each day ? from the moment he woke up until the moment his mind succumbed to exhaustion ? he was angry. He fought with his wife, who complained that his aloofness had created emotional distance that was too vast to bridge. She told him he had returned from the war a stranger, and most certainly, he was not the same man she had once loved. On one occasion, in the midst of a heated argument, she told him the military had shipped his body home, but they had forgotten to send his heart because it was still dying a slow death somewhere in the jungles of Cambodia.

When his twelve-year-old daughter experienced the first angst of puberty, he flew into a rage, ranting like a madman because he couldn?t understand her moodiness. After the argument ended, she locked the door to her bedroom and practiced guitar. It was an act of rebellion that he soon learned to hate.

A year later, no longer able to tolerate his abuse, his wife and daughter left him and moved away.

I became involved in this tragedy when James and his wife -- separately -- shared the details of his story. I was teaching their daughter at the time. I am only sharing it now because it is relevant (in a round about way) to what is happening in our nation's capitol. I believe it helps to expose the fallacy of the Republican meme that all government is evil, and that we are better off when it is kept out of our daily lives.

To put it in a proper context, consider this: the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 -- more popularly known as the G.I. Bill of Rights -- was one of the most successful government programs enacted in our nation?s history:

The gold standard of commitment to veterans was established in 1944 when Congress passed the G.I. Bill of Rights. The measure was an attempt to do right by the 16 million Americans under arms during the greatest war in history; it also was a key part of Roosevelt's plan to keep the economy from slipping back into depression once the stimulus of wartime spending ceased. The G.I. Bill put mustering-out money in the hands of soldiers and supplemented that with compensation until vets found jobs. The government also underwrote the biggest purchase most vets would ever make?a house. Three-and-a-half million vets benefited from mortgage assistance. In the late 1940s, the G.I. Bill financed nearly half the new houses built in the United States.

The bill's provisions for education payments meant that soldiers wouldn't flood the labor market. The government offered to pay tuition and fees and a monthly living stipend. Nearly 8 million G.I.s took advantage of the program. A few years after the war, G.I. Bill students occupied more than 40 percent of the seats in colleges, which welcomed the mature, motivated learners.

Many historians and economists consider the G.I. Bill the best investment the country ever made. The original bill and subsequent updates cost taxpayers $70 billion, but studies show that several times that amount was returned to the government in the form of higher taxes paid by G.I.s who would never have gone to college without government help. The economy surged, the middle class grew and millions of lives were enriched. (emphasis mine)

Unfortunately, veterans of the Vietnam War did not enjoy the same quality of benefits as their predecessors, and because our nation?s leaders were so incredibly myopic, the cost of treating their problems -- mental illness, homelessness, and poverty -- is still ongoing.

And herein lies the real fallacy of the Republican?s argument that big government is an obstacle to prosperity: FDR clearly demonstrated that expensive government programs implemented during hard times can stimulate the economy in a big way. (emphasis mine)

The real problem with government isn't the institution itself, nor is it the cost of some of its most expensive programs: it is the corruption and shortsightedness of its leaders.

The success of the G.I. Bill exonerated FDR. Many of his fiercest Republican critics accused him of driving the American economy over the cliff. They believed his decision to invest in building a strong American middle class would bankrupt our nation. Fortunately, FDR's vision paid off, and because he had the courage and determination to see the program enacted, our nation's citizens enjoyed a tremendous period of prosperity.

But that prosperity began to disappear when Ronald Reagan became president.

Why?

Because his policies favored only the wealthy. In an effort to please wealthy benefactors, he began dismantling programs that had been designed to guarantee the poorest people in our nation had access to the American Dream. By limiting opportunities for lower and middle class Americans, he reduced our national tax base, which in turn, contributed to the stagnation of our economy.

Our country desperately needs leaders who have the political vision and determination of FDR. The plan he created for recovery was successful because it treated every American with dignity and respect -- and that is the strength of the Democratic message. Unlike the Republicans, we value all human life.

3-month-old child killed by family pit bull in Burleson | Crime Blog

A three-month-old child was fatally mauled by a pet dog as police were investigating a domestic disturbance outside the home Monday.

The Burleson 911 center received a hangup call at approximately 6:48 p.m. Monday evening. Operators traced the call to the 200 block of Linda Drive where they began going door-to-door to find the source of the call. A domestic disturbance was found at one residence.

Police began interviewing witnesses and others involved in the disturbance in the front yard. An infant had fallen asleep in the arms of one relative and was taken inside the home and placed it on a bed, police say.

Soon after, screams were heard and man came running out of the house with the infant. The child, identified as Rayden Bruce, had been attacked by the family?s pit bull inside the home.

The child was transported to Cook Children?s hospital in Fort Worth where he was pronounced dead.

The dog, registered to the infant?s father Barrett Bruce, was taken by Burleson Animal Control and euthanized this morning.

Once the investigation into the death is concluded, Burleson police will determine if anyone will face charges in the death.

Katy Perry named Billboard's woman of the year

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop star Katy Perry was named Billboard's Woman of the Year on Tuesday, after a whirlwind 12 months in which she split up with her husband and turned their break-up into a hit single and film.

Perry, 27, channeled her split with British comedian Russell Brand in late 2011 into the chart-topping hit "Part Of Me" and a 3D behind-the-scenes film "Katy Perry: Part Of Me" that documented her personal and professional ups and downs.

The singer has won over a legion of fans, known as 'katycats,' on Twitter and Facebook with her quirky costumes and catchy bubble gum pop songs.

Forbes placed Perry at No. 3 on their highest-earning female musicians list in December 2011, estimating her pre-tax earnings at $44 million.

She has sold 48 million tracks in the United States alone, according to Billboard, including the hits "Firework," "California Gurls," "E.T." and "Hot N Cold" from her major-label 2008 debut "One Of The Boys" and 2010 album "Teenage Dream."

Perry has become a branding machine, lending her name to her own fragrance, nail polish and false eyelash lines. She is also the face of skin care line Proactiv and Popchips snacks.

Billboard's editorial director Bill Werde said in a statement that Perry was chosen for her achievements, calling her "one of the most exciting and inspiring artists in the industry."

"Katy Perry broke into the industry not even five years ago, and has already accomplished more than most artists can hope for in an entire career," Werde said.

The Billboard Woman of the Year award selects a female artist with trailblazing achievements. Previous recipients include Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie.

Perry will receive the award at the 2012 Billboard Women in Music event in New York on November 30.

Education, psychological support key for defibrillator patients

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Because depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder are common among people with implanted cardioverter defibrillators, doctors and nurses should provide gender- and age-specific information on the potential psychological impact. Each month, 10,000 people, including children, have a defibrillator implanted to restore normal heart rhythm and prevent sudden cardiac death.

Improved patient education and ongoing psychological support will help people cope with the psychological distress of having an implanted defibrillator, according to a scientific statement from the American Heart Association.

The statement, published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation, is a comprehensive review of the psychosocial and quality of life for people who receive an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to restore normal heart rhythm and prevent sudden cardiac death. It includes recommendations for improved patient care and identifies areas where more research is needed.

The authors recommend routine screening and appropriate treatment for anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, which patients with ICDs often experience.

"A shock from an ICD can be lifesaving, but it can also affect a person's quality of life and psychological state," said Sandra B. Dunbar, R.N., D.S.N., chair of the statement writing group. "It's important to look at this issue now because 10,000 people have an ICD implanted each month. They range from older people with severe heart failure to healthy children who have a gene that increases the risk of sudden cardiac arrest."

Before implantation, clinicians should provide clear information about the benefits and limitations of the ICD, prognosis and impact on lifestyle including activity and occupation.

"Education and support need to include the patient and the family and be broader than just a focus on maintaining the device. Providers need to help patients address ICD-specific concerns about symptoms, heart disease treatment, physical activities and end-of-life issues," said Dunbar, who is also the Charles Howard Candler Professor at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University in Atlanta.

Among the statement's recommendations to improve psychological outcomes, physicians and nurses should:

  • Emphasize that the ICD protects against sudden death, but does not improve your underlying heart condition unless the device does other things, such as certain types of pacing.
  • Assess the patient's concerns and psychological status at each follow-up visit.
  • Develop a clear "shock plan" so patients and family members know what to do in the event of a shock.
  • Help patients and their families deal with stressful situations that may develop with an ICD.
  • Provide gender-specific, age-appropriate information for children and their families.

Although pediatric ICD recipients make up less than 1 percent of the ICD population, complications are more frequent and these patients will live with the defibrillators for a much longer period of time, according to the statement.

"Experiencing a shock is distressing and patients have a wide variety of responses," Dunbar said. "Some find it very reassuring that it's working, while others find the actual physical sensations frightening and overwhelming. That's why we suggest that clinicians provide an ongoing assessment of ICD patients' psychological needs."

The statement identified several areas for further research, including predicting which patients are likely to experience psychological distress and how to alleviate it; the level of sports participation and physical activity appropriate for children and teens with ICDs; and when and how to discuss potential ICD deactivation near the end of life.

For film tech nerds the world over, this documentary about the advent of digital filmmaking and what it means for the old school film purists is an engaging must-see. Keanu Reeves narrates and interviews an impressive roster of directors, cinematographers, editors, actors, and execs through this highly technical history and many of the subjects are truly game. I think their candidness is largely due to Reeves being there. Most seem to feel really comfortable around him, which is essential to getting some of the gold that comes out of the likes of Steven Soderbergh and David Fincher in particular. Editor Anne Coates, the 86-year-old editor of such classics as LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) and OUT OF SIGHT (1998) brings a refreshing and surprising perspective. Just when you expect the film vs. digital argument to have lines drawn depending on age, Ms. Coates shows a delightful openness to the new technology. This is an astounding time capsule piece which demonstrates how truly far we've come in digital image quality, particularly just in the past few years. There are times where you'll go back and forth about how you feel, because ultimately, both sides make great points. I couldn't believe how terrible some of the earlier digital films looked (TADPOLE or CHUCK AND BUCK anyone?). This may feel really too inside baseball for the layperson, but if you have any interest in how we experience filmed stories, this is essential viewing.

Chick-fil-A waffles on gay marriage, fries brand image

Brandon Dill / AP

Sheila Smith wears a sign showing support for Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy outside the fast food chain's store on Union Avenue in Memphis, Tenn. Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012.

By Martha C. White, NBC News contributor

?

Updated at 4:45 p.m. ET: In a message posted on his website Friday afternoon, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee said he spoke?personally with Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy, who gave him a statement saying, "There continues to be erroneous implications in the media that Chick-fil-A changed our practices and priorities in order to obtain permission for a new restaurant in Chicago. That is incorrect. Chick-fil-A made no such concessions, and we remain true to who we are and who we have been."

"I am angry and disgusted," said?Rick Garcia, senior policy advisor at advocacy group The Civil Rights Agenda. "Chick-fil-A lied to us and lied to the alderman so that they could open their store in Chicago."?

Chick-fil-A is playing?a high-stakes game of chicken, as both fans and foes of the food chain question what its new stance on gay rights really means.

Corporate reputation experts warned that Chick-fil-A was quickly alienating potential customers across the political spectrum.?

"These issues are ... very difficult for brands to navigate through," said?Tim Calkins, marketing professor at the?Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.?"They could've stuck to their positions and backed it up. The fact they haven't done that says clearly this whole issue has become a problem for them."

The Atlanta-based chain became embroiled in the gay marriage debate over the summer when?president Dan Cathy's spoke about his belief in "traditional" marriage in an interview with a Baptist publication.?Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee called for a "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," which drew droves of supporters to the company's stores. In response, gay-rights groups organized a "Same-Sex Kiss-In" later that week.

This week, Chicago-based advocacy group The Civil Rights Agenda announced that city Alderman Proco Joe Moreno, who had voiced objections to the proposed opening of a Chick-fil-A restaurant in his ward, had reversed his opinion after the fast-food operator had a change of heart.?

Chick-fil-A said it would "treat every person with honor, dignity and respect -- regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender." Although this was characterized by TCRA and Moreno as the first time Chick-fil-A put this in writing, the company used almost identical wording in a statement it issued back in July.?

The company also pledged that its nonprofit arm, the?WinShape Foundation, would "not support[ing] organizations with political agendas," and said, "our intent is not to engage in political or social debates."

Through WinShape, "Chick-Fil-A has donated more than $5 million since 2003 to anti-gay groups,?including those that have been designated 'hate groups' by the Southern Poverty Law Center," according to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Initially, company spokespeople would not comment, referring only to the statement issued by the company following the furor that erupted over the summer.

Chick-fil-A says it will stop funding anti-gay groups

Chick-fil-A tried to keep the agreement under wraps, said Rick Garcia, TCRA senior policy advisor. "My perspective is they want to have it both ways," he said.??They?re getting opposition all over major metropolitan areas particularly in the north... The dilemma for them is will this hurt them with the right wingers?"

The answer is probably yes. "In my last meeting with company executives, I corroborated what they told me back in January: that donations to anti-gay groups, which most concerned the LGBT community, have ceased," Moreno's statement said. Since the news broke, Chick-fil-A's Facebook page has been inundated with angry messages from people who say they are now-former supporters of the chain.

Moreno said he got verbal assurances from company executives, and he said the verbiage in the release and similar wording validated his claim, although gay rights were never specifically mentioned. He said Chick-fil-A executives also let him look at an internal accounting document from the foundation that showed no donations to groups that oppose gay marriage during this calendar year.

It's unlikely that the majority of Chick-fil-A supporters who stood on line, some for hours, in the heat to buy food as part of "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" last month knew that the company had quietly stopped funding the anti-gay marriage cause some eight months earlier. Chick-fil-A did not release sales figures but said that the event was a "record" day for sales; one independent analyst estimated that the company could have seen a 50 percent increase in sales that day.

Moreno said he was satisfied that the references to political and social issues, along with the pledge to respect all sexual orientations in Chick-fil-A's statements, reflected a commitment to stop funding anti-gay groups. He said the somewhat vague verbiage ? same-sex marriage, for instance, is never specifically mentioned as an issue ? was actually better in that it implied a more inclusive brand of tolerance on Chick-fil-A's part.

He admitted, though, that relying on the company's own assertions about its donation practices was a bit of a gamble. "I'm not naive," he said, adding that the company could still "try to find a way around" keeping its word.

He didn't have to wait long. On the same day that his press release was dated, Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy Tweeted a photo of a WinShape fundraiser called Ride for the Family, which ends Friday. The event's registration page instructed participants to make the $3,500 registration fee?payable to the Marriage and Family Foundation, Inc., an organization founded by Dan Cathy's brother. Its headquarters have the same mailing address as Chick-fil-A's.

This prompted a response from TCRA. "Although The Civil Rights Agenda is pleased with the initial outcome of Chick-fil-A?s agreement... more work needs to be done in holding Chick-fil-A accountable to their promises," it said in a statement Thursday evening.

"I?m discouraged by that behavior," Moreno said about Cathy's Tweet. "He has the right to have bigoted beliefs," he added.

Supporters and detractors alike can only continue to wonder where the brand's allegiances lie. Chick-fil-A issued a statement Thursday, saying "We want to provide some context and clarity in around who we are, what we believe and our priorities in relation?to?corporate giving." It went onto say, "Our intent is not to support political or social agendas," but it didn't mention gay rights or gay-marriage causes specifically.

"It seems to me that their change in position is half-hearted and does not seem either genuine or trustworthy," said Marcia Horowitz, senior executive vice president at public relations firm?Rubenstein Associates, Inc. "As a result, it may well further inflame the issue, with both sides now dissatisfied with their response."
