Poll: Christie Leads Among Potential GOP Candidates for 2016

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has the lead among several potential Republican presidential candidates for 2016, according to a Fairleigh Dickinson University poll.

Among registered voters who have heard of him, 55 percent view Christie favorably, compared to 46 percent for Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and 45 percent for Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Then comes former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, with a 32 percent favorable rating among those who know of him, followed by former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum with 31 percent.

As for Christie, ?his appeal is likely based on his call for bipartisanship during his high-profile speech at the GOP convention, as well as the praise he had for President Obama in the days after Hurricane Sandy ravaged his state,? Krista Jenkins, director of the poll, said in a statement.

The New Jersey governor receives bipartisan support. He?s viewed favorably by 59 percent of Republicans, 52 percent of Democrats, and 57 percent of independents.

When it comes to name recognition, Bush topped the chart at 80 percent, followed by Santorum at 79 percent, Christie at 68 percent, Rubio at 56 percent, and Jindal at 37 percent.

?Gov. Jindal?s low visibility is somewhat of a silver lining for him,? Jenkins said. ?If he should assume more national visibility, his strong favorability rating provides a good foundation to build upon.?
