During a Thursday night appearance on SPEED's "Race Hub" program, the former driver and current TV analyst said Patrick is more of a marketing machine than a race car driver and doubts the 30-year-old will ever be one "because I think it's too late."

Patrick is a Sprint Cup Series rookie with Stewart Haas Racing following an open wheel career in the IZOD IndyCar Series highlighted by an historic 2008 victory at Motegi, Japan. She won the pole and finished eighth in the season-opening Daytona 500 but her average starting and finishing positions are 32nd and 25.8 respectively.

Former boss Dale Earnhardt Jr. disagreed with Petty's assessment, saying Friday that Patrick "is outrunning several guys on the circuit."

That likely won't stop Petty, 53, son of seven-time Cup champion Richard "The King" Petty and an eight-time race winner, from criticizing Patrick. An analyst for TNT and Fox/SPEED, he understands the widespread interest in Patrick, who has been featured in racy TV ads for sponsor Go Daddy and was IndyCar's most popular driver for several years.

Patrick's driving skills, in Petty's opinion, don't justify the hype.

"That's where I have a problem," he said. "Where fans have bought into the hype of the marketing, to think she's a race car driver. She can go fast, and I've seen her go fast. She drives the wheels off it when she goes fast."

Asked if she has learned to race, Petty continued, "she's not a race car driver. There's a difference. The King always had that stupid saying, but it's true, 'Lots of drivers can drive fast, but very few drivers can race.' Danica has been the perfect example of somebody who can qualify better than what she runs. She can go fast, but she can't race."

As someone who gave Patrick a chance to transition to stock cars over three years in the Nationwide Series at JR Motorsports, Earnhardt calls Patrick a tough competitor who works hard and said she wouldn't have a ride if she couldn't stay with the pack or finished last every week.

"If she was not able to compete," Earnhardt said at Kentucky Speedway, "I think you might be able to say Kyle has an argument. But she's out there running competitively and running strong on several accounts. I think that she has got a good opportunity and a rightful position in the sport to keep competing and she just might surprise even Kyle Petty."

Canada Fishing Trip Part one - June 2013

Hey all, I haven't been online much lately due to way too much traveling. Some of it fishing and some of it work related. I spent 10 days fishing in Canada with fellow moderator Russ (Look Out Below) and will pull together a full report shortly. There is so much we targeted that it will take a bit to compile all the pics and footage. We caught some really great fish and made some insane meals back at camp.

Fishing Report Part One:

I began this trip with a little bit of a humorous personal challenge by fishing the first three days with nothin but a Barbie Rod before switching over to Fly gear. Passing through the Outfiitters Airbase I got quit the comments carrying my Pink Barbie rod past all their expensive gear. I put together a quick video of the just the Barbie fishing and will add to this report with the rest of the fishing over the next few days.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than MustangThe P-51 Mustang is one of the most iconic aircraft in aviation history. These long-range, single-seater fighter-bombers served throughout the Seconds World War as well as during in Korea before being relegated to scrap yards. But many have survived, some in the most unlikely of places. You'll never guess what quiet suburb the Lil' Margaret was found in.

P-51D (F-6D) Lil? Margaret

?Mustang Mike? Coutches of American Aircraft Sales in Hayward, California, was on the hunt for P-51H parts in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Coutches was selling licensed, ready-to-fly P-51Ds for $3,995 at the time, but his interest was in the P-51H. The 194th Fighter Squadron of the California Air National Guard operated P-51Ds and -51Hs from the Hayward Airport, and it was a sad day when the unit moved to Fresno, California, and transitioned to the F-86A. About a hundred miles northeast of Hayward, the U.S. Air Force depot at Mc-Clellan Air Force Base, near Sacramento, California, had seen hundreds of Mustangs pass through its overhaul lines and dozens were sold surplus from here as well. In addition, thousands of pounds of Mustang parts were auctioned off as they were no longer needed in an all-jet air force.

In the late 1940s, someone had purchased a Mustang at a surplus sale (possibly at McClellan), and then attempted to sell it to Israel or one of the Latin American countries looking for aircraft in the late 1940s or early 1950s. The plane was reportedly disassembled, crated, sitting on the dock, about to be loaded on a ship, when U.S. Customs stepped in and seized the Mustang. The aircraft did not leave the country and was later sold at auction and then purchased by a scrap dealer.

Coutches was going into one particular Sacramento-area salvage yard that was rich in H model Mustang parts?parts that only Mustang Mike needed and wanted. Every time he would go in, the scrap dealer would bug him to buy a disassembled D model Mustang sitting in a corner of the yard, but they could never reach an agreement as Mustang Mike didn?t want a disassembled P-51D when he could buy flying aircraft for not much more of a premium.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

Coutches returned once again, and the scrapman finally told him if he wanted any more H model parts, he was going to have to buy the disassembled P-51D Mustang. The aircraft was ready for transport, so Mustang Mike hauled it home and put it in his backyard. The story has it that the Coutches?s kids played on it for years.

In 1961, William ?Bill? Myers of St. Charles, Missouri, bought the disassembled P-51D from Coutches. Hauled east, the fighter plane project took over Myers?s house, basement, and garage. And slowly word got around the neighborhood that there was a plane in a garage. The rumor gained legs as people would see it when the door was up, and by the mid-1970s as the warbird movement picked up steam, the rumor had grown and was beginning to spread to pilots in neighboring states.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

Mustang owner and restorer John Dilley from the Fort Wayne Air Service, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Butch Schroeder of Danville, Illinois?who at the time owned former El Salvadorean Air Force Cavalier conversion P-51D FAS 409, ex 45-11559, North American Maid?had heard the rumor, too. ?I kind of beat Dilley to it,? said Schroeder. ?I had the opportunity to go to St. Louis on business and I was always looking in the phone book trying to find who I thought was the owner at the time, but I always ended up empty handed.

?A short time later, a friend of mine who owned a Hawker Sea Fury asked me to take North American Maid to an airshow in St. Charles, Missouri. I asked if the airshow was going to pay for fuel and said I wasn't interested in going without it. After turning him down, we got to talking about this mystery Mustang, which was thought to be in the same area. My friend said the hosts of the airshow knew where the Mustang was, and I?m thinking ?Yeah, right.? I told my friend that if the show hosts would take me to see the plane, then I?d fly down.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

?I went to the airshow and one evening they took me to see the Mustang, and on the way over they said they were not interested in buying it. So I tried and made a deal to buy the plane.? Butch Schroeder had found the elusive P-51D Mustang in a garage, and bought it!

Restoring an F-6D Mustang

Upon closer inspection, Schroeder determined that the Mustang was a rare photo reconnaissance version of the P-51D known as an F-6D, and later an RF-51D, serial number 44-84786. ?When we researched the history of the airplane, we knew exactly what we were looking at. It still had the original data plate showing it was designated an F-6D. It was kind of ironic; most of your airplanes have a metal data tag with the information stamped in it. This was all done on phenolic and it was handwritten using something like a paintbrush,? Schroeder said.

The F-6D was built at North American Aviation?s Dallas, Texas, factory and delivered on June 8, 1945, after the war in Europe had ended, but still three months before the Japanese surrendered. The photoreconn fighter was assigned to U.S. Army Air Force bases at Andrews, Washington, D.C.; Stuttgart, Arkansas; Brooks Field, Texas; Topeka, Kansas; Hobbs Field, New Mexico; Spokane, Washington; Kelly Field, Texas; Pope Field, North Carolina; and finally to McClellan Air Force Base, part of the Air Material Command, for storage in June 1949. The F-6D was stricken from the air force?s inventory on November 25, 1949.

As the now proud-owner of a Mustang project, Schroeder had to get the fighter from the St. Louis area home to Danville, Illinois, a distance of 215 miles. First he had to call his friends with pickup trucks, then find enough additional friends to help load the project. ?Bill Myers?s wife was real glad to see the Mustang go because, in essence, I had to clean their garage to get the plane out,? Schroeder said. ?I think it took us six pickup trucks and five trailers and we went down early one morning, loaded up, and we and had it back home that afternoon.? Myers had about 95 percent of the airplane, and what he didn't have Schroder would use his extensive contacts in the warbird community to locate.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

Once home, the P-51D was stored in Schroeder?s hangar while he worked with Mike VadeBonCoeur to return his AT-6 to full, stock military configuration. ?I had become friends with Mike when he was still in high school,? Schroeder said. ?He came and started just helping me and I would pay him flying time in exchange so he could work on getting his pilot?s license. So in essence, to start out with, he worked for me, and then years later, he went off on his own and started Midwest Aero.? VadeBonCoeur had worked with Schroeder on his warbirds before leaving to attend Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When he returned, VadeBonCoeur and Schroeder finished the restoration of U.S. Air Force T-6G serial number 49-3144 in 1990. The aircraft was awarded the Experimental Aircraft Association?s Warbird Reserve Grand Champion Award, and VadeBonCoeur was recognized with the Golden Wrench Award for his work. Today, VadeBonCoeur?s Midwest Aero has been recognized for its highly detailed, award-winning P-51D Mustang restorations, such as Cripes A? Mighty, Daddy?s Girl, Happy Jack?s Go Buggy, Live Bait, and Red Dog.

?I was doing most of that early work on the T-6 and the Mustang part time, as I had a really nice job at the University of Illinois,? said VadeBonCoeur. ?I left the University of Illinois to come work for Butch full time on the T-6. I kind of always had it in the back of my mind that if I was going to leave a good, solid university position that my hope and goal was to be able to eventually start my own business.?

Once the T-6G was out of the hangar, Schroeder and VadeBonCoeur began the restoration of the photoreconnaissance Mustang full time. The project would take three more years of hard work. ?This airplane had never been a surveying airplane or a warbird. When we got it, it still had the markings on the wings and was pretty much the way it had come out of the factory. So early on, it was decided that the goal was to make it look just like the day that it rolled out of the factory and keep it stock?single seat, guns, cameras, the whole deal,? Schroeder said. ?For some reason, guns had never been put in that airplane even though a lot of the equipment was in there. We had to go out and I made about three different trips to California scrounging around. Back then, the rare, original fittings were pretty easy to find because nobody wanted them. Now, everybody wants those detail parts, so they?re much harder to find. There?s an armor plate that sits right behind the propeller to protect the fuel tank that?s back there. I found it in California at a Mustang shop and they were using it just to prop the door open. The armor plating that goes behind the seat . . . somebody was using it as a barbecue grill.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

?I had a list of everything that I was looking for, and I left copies with people, and again, at the time, this was stuff that nobody wanted. I can?t remember if it was Strega or Stiletto, but one of the racing Mustangs had been an F-6D and some original, cool stuff came out of one of them. Later I was out in Fort Collins, Colorado, and I went and talked to Darrel Skurich [known for rebuilding the XP-51 on display at the Experimental Aircraft Association Museum]. He had the camera mount I needed for my aircraft. Dennis Schoenfelder had the camera ports, but they needed some repair work, which was done by John Neel of Low Pass Inc. in Griffin, Georgia. I also had the good fortune to become friends with Brian O?Farrell. He?s the guy that bought all the Dominican Mustangs and their spares, and he had a warehouse full of brand-new parts. I had the chance to pick through O?Farrell?s inventory of new parts for my airplane.?

Mike VadeBonCoeur said, ?We did everything except the engine, propeller, the radiator, and instruments. I probably built most of the systems. I did all of the hydraulic systems, all the electrical wiring, most of all of the installation of the interior components, and basically all of the assembly work. Butch had already restored certain components and had those sitting aside and ready to go in.?

Try as he might, Schroeder could never locate any factory blueprints for the F-6D conversion. None of the P-51D Mustang microfilm showed any of the photoreconnaissance modifications, and many parts had to be made from photos, or from original parts that were duplicated. Schroeder?s Cavalier Mustang was used as a template for the interior installations, but when it came to the F-6 modifications, the restoration crew was on its own. ?There are no diagrams for cable links, for instance, for the trim cables or the elevator cables, and are all modified in the rear fuselage to avoid the cameras. It?s different than a standard P-51D in the oxygen bay area as well, so we kind of had to experiment trying to come up with proper cable links,? said VadeBonCoeur. ?I remember that being a challenge for me at the time, but we ended up making it all happen. I think we had samples of elevator cables, but we didn't have samples of any of the trim cables. Those had disappeared from the fuselage years ago, so I didn't really have anything to go off of. We kind of had to back-blueprint it and sort it all out. We just followed the original routing, which in an F-6D the elevator and trim cables are all routed differently than they are in a stock D.

There?s just not data available that we've been able to come up with that I've ever seen. The manuals show illustrations of how the cables were routed, but no specifics for cable links and things like that.?

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

Mating the wing to the fuselage was a first for VadeBonCoeur. ?We had called a crane out to do the heavy lifting, and we looked at the weather radar before we got started. Of course, back in 1990, the weather radar wasn't as good and no one had a smartphone to give one last peek to see how conditions had changed. We decided to go ahead and do it, and as soon as we got the airplane up, got the wing put in position, and were ready to lift the fuselage up, a thunderstorm hit,? VadeBonCoeur said. ?We ended up putting that thing together in a pouring rainstorm, and of course, once we were done and the crane was ready to leave, it was beautiful. Fuselage to wing was in the middle of a rainstorm, the engine we did the same day and it went just fine.?

Inside the F-6D, the oxygen bottle arrangement is different from the standard P-51D. The -51D has two long and two short bottles in the aft fuselage while the F-6D uses large, bomber-size oxygen bottles. In addition, the ribs on the left side of the fuselage were changed to accommodate the camera installations. To access the cameras, an access panel was fitted to the starboard side of the fuselage, forward of the fuselage/tail production break.

?In comparison to what we do today, there?s really no comparison. A lot of it is just learning over the years. I think that we knew that the interior color that it is today wasn't what it was, but Butch had already started that and it wasn't in his best interest, or desire at that point, to go backwards and change it all,? said VadeBonCoeur. ?We left it with interior Imron green that he had picked.?

Putting Her Back in the Air

When the restoration was nearly complete, Schroeder settled on a suitable paint scheme for the F-6D. He chose to replicate the markings of Lil? Margaret flown by Capt. Clyde B. East, who, at age nineteen, joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and entered the European war flying P-51As against targets along the enemy coast. He transferred to the U.S. Army Air Forces and was assigned to the Ninth Air Force?s 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron flying Supermarine Spitfires. The squadron transitioned into the P-51B, and then into the F-6D.

East participated in the June 6, 1944, D-Day invasion, downing an Fw-190; the December 1944 Battle of the Bulge (one Bf-109); and in March and April 1945 downed another eleven enemy aircraft. By war?s end, East had thirteen confirmed aerial victories. After the war, he remained in the service, and later flew reconnaissance Mustangs and RF-80s during the Korean War. East retired from the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel in February 1965.

Lil? Margaret?s first post restoration flight was done by John Dilley on June 18, 1993. ?I was the second person to fly the airplane,? Schroeder said. ?I guess it had this kind of an eerie feeling like somebody?s looking over your shoulder, which comes from the armor plating sitting right behind you, and trying to get used to looking through the gun sight. Originally the gun sight had kind of a gold colored lens in it and you had to look around it as you couldn?t look through it. We ended up changing that and putting in regular glass and that took care of the vision problem.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

?I had quite a bit of time in the Mustang, having owned North American Maid before flying Lil? Margaret. When flying the plane, the first thing I noticed was that Lil? Margaret was heavier than the Cavalier P-51D because we had installed guns and ammunition, armor plating, and all that detail equipment. It probably adds up to a couple of hundred pounds.?

Schroeder has united East with the aircraft resplendent in his colors many times, and East and Lil? Margaret have always drawn a big crowd when the two have been featured at the EAA?s Warbirds In Review at the annual airshow in Oshkosh. At EAA AirVenture 1993,Butch Schroeder?s Lil? Margaret was recognized with the EAA Warbirds Grand Champion Award, and Mike VadeBonCoeur was given the Golden Wrench in recognition of his restoration work on the F-6D.

Reflecting on the restoration, VadeBonCoeur said, ?I think the thing that most people probably appreciated about Lil? Margaret was all the original details that went into this restoration,? said VadeBonCoeur. ?I say original details meaning things like guns and the camera that was installed, and we put decals on. We made vinyl decals instead of what we do today, which uses water transfer materials like they did during the war, so in terms of authenticity it really is not anywhere close . . . I?d like to get another shot at it.

?At the time, Lil? Margaret was certainly heralded as a really authentic airplane; however, today it is not anywhere close to the standards we do, or even other people do in a Mustang restoration. For instance, we made one North American Aviation inspection stamp during the F-6D rebuild. Today I've got a box full of them so every time I find a new one, we try to replicate it and use it in the rebuild. That?s one difference between what we do today and what we did back then, but at the time that level of detail had not been seen yet. When people did see Lil? Margaret, they thought that attention to detail was really a nice touch. On top of that, it was an F-6D, and nobody had seen one with the camera, fuselage gas tank, the armor plating, all the wing guns installed, bomb racks that worked, and basically a stock instrument panel. Most Mustangs at the time were restored with gray interiors and modern avionics everywhere, leather interiors, and that was the standard. I think Lil? Margaret was one of the first airplanes,if not the first, with so much original equipment. I think what we?vedone was really nice, but it was just something different?something people hadn?t seen before.?

In December 2012, Schroder is doing Lil? Margaret?s annualinspection and the airplane has 158 hours on it. With pride, Schroeder said, ?I?ve probably flown half of that.?

For Butch Schroeder the tale of a Mustang in a garage is true and he?s got flying proof!

Historic Immigration Overhaul Clears Senate, but a Hostile House Awaits

The Senate approved a measure Thursday to make the most dramatic changes to immigration law in 25 years. It would give a path to citizenship to some 11 million undocumented immigrants, dramatically boost border security, and create a new work visa program for future immigrants. ?The measure passed with a bipartisan vote of 68-32, though a narrow majority of Senate Republicans opposed the legislation.

RELATED: Opponents to Immigration Reform Are Running Out of Options

But the legislation faces an uncertain outcome in the House, where Republicans view the bill with outright hostility.?

RELATED: Obama's Agenda Was Only Mostly Dead

"I consider this an astounding success. An astounding success. You could ratify a treaty or override a veto. This is as good as it gets in the Senate," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., one of the members of the "Gang of Eight" Republicans and Democrats that crafted the legislation.

MORE FROM NATIONAL JOURNAL

"I thought we could probably get a majority at the beginning. I certainly didn't think we could get 68 votes. That's pretty impressive," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., another leading Republican supporter.

RELATED: Debating Birthright Citizenship

The Senate's final vote, with 14 Republicans joining all Democrats, was the result of dozens of lawmakers accepting things that they would normally reject for the sake of passing a comprehensive bill. Democrats still fret that the bill's massive influx of troops and drones on the border, requested by Republicans, will create militarized zones and hurt local communities. Republicans fear that the path to citizenship, requested by Democrats, will encourage more illegal immigration in the future.?

RELATED: Best Tweets: Radioactive Arizona Edition

In that sense, the bill's passage also marks a rare example where lawmakers compromised on a tough issue at a time when the political differences of both parties are so stark.

The moment isn't lost on the GOP-controlled House, where Republicans are deeply divided on whether to give undocumented immigrants any type of legal status. At least half of them are solid 'no' votes on anything approaching the Senate proposal. Many think illegal immigrants should not become citizens under the procedures set forth in the Senate bill. The House members are working their way through a series of smaller measures that they hope can compete with the Senate bill.

House Republicans are unmoved by the sense of urgency projected by immigration reform advocates. "The bottom line is it's been since 1986 that there was legislation related to immigration reform. I don't know what a couple more months is going to hurt," said Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., who chairs the House Judiciary Committee's Immigration Subcommittee.

Gowdy is friends with Senate "gang" member Lindsey Graham, who hails from his home state, but he says he disagrees with Graham's approach to immigration. Graham acknowledges that South Carolina has its share of "self-deportation, put 'em in jail folks? I've lost those people. They're there, but I lost them a long time ago," he said.

Graham's advice to the House? "Take up immigration on your own timetable and the way you would like to see it happen. Just address the issue. If you don't like our bill, do one of your own."

That's exactly what the House is doing. House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday reiterated publicly the private vow he made to House Republicans a day earlier, that no immigration bill will pass without a majority of them signing off. "For any legislation ? including a conference report ? to pass the House, it's going to have to be a bill that has the support of a majority of our members," he said.

Immigration reform advocates are preparing to blame the House Republicans for blocking the Senate's legislation if they fail to pass an immigration bill that would allow a House-Senate conference committee. If the House doesn't pass legislation, activists will likely turn their attention to the administration next year, asking for more deferrals of deportation along the lines of last year's deferred action program for "Dreamers," unauthorized youth who were brought to the country as kids.

"The irony is that if House Republicans block immigration reform, in hopes of thwarting Obama and getting a bill more to their liking in the future, they will give Obama a chance to go down in history as the great emancipator of Latino immigrants," said America's Voice Executive Director Frank Sharry. "A future Democratic Congress and President will be able to pass reform with a path to citizenship without giving nearly as much as they're prepared to give this year."

But senators see this year's immigration debate as a welcome return to some semblance of ordinary legislating. It comes before lawmakers are preparing for an ugly debt ceiling fight in the fall.

"It has been a step in the right direction with eight senators putting the bill forward. The committee markup was robust," said Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La. She wasn't involved in writing the bill but became a key figure on the Senate floor when she briefly halted debate and angrily confronted Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., about why she couldn't get her amendments into the vote queue.

Landrieu said that final passage of the immigration bill shows that major legislation can indeed sprout through the muck of partisan squabbles. "I'm trying to be one of those green shoots," she said a few hours before the Senate's vote. "It has not been a model of bipartisanship on the floor," she added, noting that the debate was overly focused on amendments from opponents. "In the old days, four years ago, [noncontroversial amendments] would have been possible."

Even so, basic cordiality among senators was on display throughout the process. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who voted against the bill, congratulated Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., on the Senate floor for the fair and transparent way he shepherded the bill through his committee.

The "Gang of Eight" made sure from the beginning that no single member emerged as the de facto "leader" that could scare away members of the opposite party. That's no small feat when several gang members?Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and John McCain, R-Ariz.?are prominent media personalities.

"Boy, will I be glad when I don't have to talk to this guy," joked Graham as he was flagged down in a Capitol hallway by Schumer the morning of the final vote.

Upbeat Japan data cheers Nikkei, Asia - gold slumps

By Ian Chua

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Asian shares rose for a third day on Friday led by a solid rally in Tokyo's Nikkei, which is on track to end the first half of the year up a barnstorming 31 percent.

Gold, however, plumbed fresh three-year lows, leaving investors battered and bruised after a near 30 percent drop this year. Analysts suspect the recent leg lower was due in part to forced liquidations of positions and quarter-end selling by funds.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> climbed 1.4 percent, pulling further away from an 11-month low and wiping out this week's losses. It was still down around 7 percent for the year.

European stocks were seen opening steady, in line with U.S. stock futures, which were a touch firmer.

The improved sentiment in Asian bourses followed Wall Street's rally as two more U.S. Federal Reserve officials sought to reassure markets that any tightening of its stimulus drive was still a distant prospect.

Japan's Nikkei average <.n225> jumped 3.5 percent to its highest in nearly four weeks, egged on by upbeat data showing consumer prices stopped falling in May and labor demand reached its strongest level in five years.

"Investors are cheered by the better data and see that Abenomics is being effective for the economy," said Takuya Takahashi, an analyst at Daiwa Securities, referring to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's expansionary policy.

Concerns about China's credit crunch continued to subside with the central bank pledging to ensure reasonable lending growth and stable markets.

Bank of America/Merrill Lynch analysts Ting Lu and Larry Hu said the worst of the liquidity squeeze is over and markets should calm down.

"No policymaker can afford to be blamed for being responsible for an unnecessary financial meltdown and growth hard landing," they wrote in a research note.

Mainland Chinese stocks <.ssec><.csi300> rose on Friday.

The better mood in equity markets helped the euro push higher, although the Australian dollar missed the party with traders citing selling pressure from Japanese banks.

The euro rose 0.3 percent to $1.3070, continuing to pull away from a four-week trough around $1.2984. This saw the dollar ease 0.1 percent against a basket of major currencies <.dxy>.

The Australian dollar fell 0.2 percent to $0.9262, within easy reach of a 33-month trough around $0.9148 plumbed on Monday.

The slide in gold, a major export earner for Australia, was one factor keeping the Aussie under pressure.

Spot gold fell deeper below $1,200 to reach its lowest since August 2010. It was on track to record its worst quarter since at least 1968.

Other commodities fared better with U.S. crude futures climbing 0.4 percent to $97.49 a barrel, while copper dipped 0.4 percent to $6,727 a metric ton.

Congresswoman who shamed contractor: ?I stood up for veterans?

Rep. Tammy Duckworth, the Democratic congresswoman and disabled Iraq War vet, has followed up on her shaming of an IRS contractor claiming his decades-old football injury at a military prep school entitled his IT business to government contracts. The grilling, she said on Thursday, was done out of respect for all veterans.

"Yesterday, I stood up for our Veterans and taxpayers in a hearing on abuse of small business programs," Duckworth wrote on Twitter. She added on Facebook: "I hope you will join me."

The Illinois lawmaker lost her legs and the use of her right arm in Iraq in 2004 when the Blackhawk helicopter she was piloting was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. She had berated Braulio Castillo, the chief executive of Leesburg, Va.-based Strong Castle, during a House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing on Capitol Hill.

Tammy Duckworth grills Braulio Castillo. (YouTube)

"Your foot hurt?" Duckworth asked Castillo.

"Yes ma'am," he replied.

"My feet hurt, too," Duckworth said. "In fact, the balls of my feet burn continuously and I feel like there's a nail being hammered into my heel right now. So I can understand pain and suffering and how service connection can cause unremitting, unyielding, unstoppable pain. So I'm sorry twisting your ankle in high school has now come back to hurt you in such a painful way, and also opportune for you to gain this status for your business."

Castillo, whose friendship with a top IRS official has come under House scrutiny, says he broke his foot at the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School in 1984.

According to its website, Strong Castle is "a Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) Center for Veteran Enterprise (CVE) verified Service-Disabled, Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), and a Commonwealth of Virginia Small, Women, and Minority (SWaM) certified Minority-Owned Small Business." In May, the company was a runner-up for the Veterans Affairs Award at a local business awards event.

During the hearing, Duckworth read aloud a letter Castillo had sent to Veterans Affairs seeking set-aside contract status. It read in part: "These are crosses that I bear due to my service to our great country and I would do it again to protect this great country.?

?I?m so glad that you would be willing to play football in prep school again to protect this great country,? Duckworth told Castillo. ?Shame on you, Mr. Castillo. Shame on you. You may not have broken any laws, but you certainly broke the trust of this great nation. You broke the trust of veterans.

"Iraq and Afghanistan veterans right now are waiting an average of 237 days for an initial disability rating," she continued. "It is because people like you who are gaming the system are adding to that backlog that young men and women who are suffering from post-traumatic stress, who are missing limbs cannot get the compensation and the help that they need."

WWE doctor goes in-depth on diagnosing and treating concussions

WWE Dr. Chris Amann

WWE Superstars put their bodies on the line in the highly competitive and demanding world of sports-entertainment. Behind the scenes, WWE physician Dr. Chris Amann discusses his role, how injuries like concussions are diagnosed, plus current and future treatments for such injuries in WWE.

WWE.com: Dr. Amann, can you describe your challenging role within WWE? Do you find it difficult to tell an injured Superstar ? regardless of how bad they want to get back into that ring?? that they?re just not ready to step back into action?

Dr. Chris Amann: Not at all. My job as a WWE physician is to make sure that the Superstars are safe and healthy, not only in the short term, but in the long term. In that regard, we are very aggressive in terms of making sure that anybody who has any concussion or post-concussive symptoms not return to the ring until their brain is fully healed.

WWE.com: What is ImPACT Testing and how is it used to manage concussions?

Amann: It?s a test that was developed several years ago by Dr. Joseph Maroon. It measures brain function such as memory, speed and recall. We use it as an extension of our physical exam when we?re trying to determine if someone?s brain function has been affected by a concussion, which is a trauma-induced changed in neurologic status. In WWE, that is usually a result of some sort of head trauma.

WWE.com: Can ImPACT Testing diagnose a concussion?

Amann: It does not diagnose a concussion. A concussion is diagnosed by typical, classic signs and symptoms which will include dizziness, confusion and sometimes memory changes. That?s a definition of a concussion. The ImPACT Test is an extension of our physical exam, in that we use it to help determine someone?s reaction time, memory and brain processing in order to see if they were affected by a concussion.

WWE.com: How does WWE manage concussions?

Amann: We manage concussions as do other professional sports organizations. The latest guidelines out of Zurich, Switzerland, that were created in 2012 in a consensus statement give us the latest guidelines and expert opinion on how to manage concussions. We use ImPACT Testing and we also use exertion testing.

Exertion testing is a process of getting somebody in the situation of their own sports-specific exertion. For example, with a Superstar, we want to get them in the ring, exert them in the ring and have them do moves and activities similar to what their sport is. We want to see if that provokes any symptoms of a concussion, such as headaches, blurred vision or dizziness.

Dr. Chris AmannWWE.com: Why is it important to run a Superstar through that before sending him or her back into the ring?

Amann: The ImPACT Test is a good way to try and figure out if someone?s brain functioning has returned to its normal, baseline state. As part of every Superstar?s initial physical examination and history that we do during their pre-contract screening, we do a baseline ImPACT Test. So that if someone does sustain a concussion, we can use the information from their ImPACT Test after their concussion and compare it to their baseline.

The exertion testing is basically to tell us if the brain is ready to go back to activity. In some cases with some Superstars that have suffered concussions recently, they?ve passed their ImPACT Test, however they get symptoms when they get back into the ring. That tells us that the brain just isn?t ready yet for physical activity and that it hasn?t fully recovered yet.

Some media outlets have interpreted our use of exertion testing as something new within the management of concussions. That is not true. We?ve always used exertion testing in addition to physical examination and ImPACT Testing to get an overall picture of whether or not a Superstar is ready to return to the ring.

WWE.com: What is the future of concussion diagnoses and management?

Amann: There are lots of exciting things going on right now. A lot of people are looking at various supplements ? such as fish oil and other antioxidants?? that may be protective to the brain. There are some blood tests being looked at as possible markers for concussions, which would help us diagnose when the brain has undergone a concussion.

WWE.com: Compared to other professional sports, where does WWE rank as far as their concern towards concussions?Dr. Chris Amann

Amann: There is an absolute proactive approach taken by both the medical team and the management when it comes to not only concussions, but to other injuries to the Superstars as well. Myself and [WWE physician] Dr. Michael Sampson both use the latest guidelines and latest tests available for helping us manage concussions. We really feel that WWE and the medical staff is at the forefront of concussion management. For example, WWE is?donating $1.2 million to the Boston University Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy

As the research evolves on concussion diagnosis and management, the WWE medical staff will always be on the forefront of that research and implementing new tools and strategies that are shown to be effective in managing concussions.

Monsanto fiscal 3Q profit slips 3 percent

Monsanto says its fiscal third quarter net income slipped 3 percent, as hits to the agricultural product company's cotton and soybean seed segments restrained revenue growth.

The St. Louis company says it earned $909 million, or $1.68 per share, in the quarter ended May 31. That's down from $937 million, or $1.74 per share, last year. Revenue inched up less than 1 percent to $4.25 billion.

Monsanto says it earned $1.66 per share, not counting a tax matter resolution.

Analysts expected earnings of $1.61 per share on $4.41 billion in revenue.

Monsanto Co. makes seeds for crops like corn, soybean, cotton and wheat and crop protection chemicals like the herbicide Roundup. The agricultural giant produces genetically engineered seeds used by farmers for their pest resistance and ability to produce bigger crops.

FEMEN Topless Protesters Jump On Tunisian PM Ali Larayedh's Car In Brussels

The European Commission on Tuesday urged Tunisia to reform criminal laws from its previous authoritarian regime as three topless feminist activists staged a protest in Brussels by jumping on visiting Tunisian Prime Minister Ali Larayedh's car.

"Stop Repression!" and "Free Amina!" the activists shouted, before being led away by police. Amina Sboui, a teenage anti-Islamist feminist, is being held in a Tunisian jail over her protests in a case that has attracted widespread controversy.

WARNING: NSFW PHOTOS BELOW

"The EU calls for a reform of laws inherited from the previous regime particularly in the criminal code to ensure freedom of speech for Tunisian men and women," European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso said at a joint briefing with Larayedh.

Barroso also said Tunisia's justice system should be overhauled "to ensure its independence and impartiality" in order for Tunisia to achieve a "full and deep democracy".

Larayedh was visiting Brussels on the eve of an appeals hearing for three European activists from the feminist group Femen who were sentenced to four months in prison this month for baring their breasts in Tunis in a pro-Amina protest.

The case has been criticised in Europe, where it is seen by some as a test of democratic freedoms under the Islamist-led government which came to power after a 2011 revolution.

Since the 1950s, Tunisia has had the most liberal laws in the Arab world on women's rights, and the ruling moderate Islamist party Ennahda is often forced to defend itself against the charge of wanting to roll back those rights.

The socially conservative Muslim nation has also witnessed a sharp rise in the activity of radical Islamists since the revolution, some of whom were angered by the topless protest and called for the activists to be given tougher sentences.

Also on Tuesday, Tunisian rapper Ala Yaacoub -- better known by his nickname Weld El 15 -- is due in court to appeal a two-year sentence for a song in which he insulted the police.

The court ruling was criticised by Tunisia's opposition and by human rights groups as an attack on freedom of speech.

Putin pledges $43bln to infrastructure upgrade

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) ? President Vladimir Putin says Russia will channel at least $43 billion toward ambitious infrastructure projects to upgrade aging roads and railways across the vast country.

Russia is struggling to spur economic growth, which is expected to be only 2.4 percent this year, the lowest in more than a decade.

Addressing an international economic forum on Friday, Putin said that at least half of Russia's rainy-day fund, which totals $86 billion, will be used to build a new highway in the region around Moscow, a high-speed rail link between Moscow and Kazan and upgrade the Trans-Siberian Railway. He did not indicate how many years the program would take to complete.

Industry experts have warned about the dangers of corruption in executing major infrastructure projects.

'Under the Dome' helps break summer rerun spell

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? There's no summer break anymore for broadcast networks, with overachieving cable competitors regularly airing new series instead of succumbing to rerun laziness.

That's why NBC has "America's Got Talent," Fox is airing "So You Think You Can Dance" and ABC scheduled the flirty "Mistresses." Over at CBS, star students have teamed up for the ambitious "Under the Dome."

The 13-episode drama series debuting Monday is based on the best-selling Stephen King book and includes heavyweights Steven Spielberg, Neal Baer ("ER," ''Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"), Jack Bender ("Lost") and comic-book and TV scribe Brian K. Vaughan as executive producers.

Such firepower counts in this increasingly competitive season, said CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler. It's even more crucial because CBS is rolling the dice with a drama, atypical first-run network fare in June.

"There is a lot of original content on-air during the summer, and there will be choices for viewers. Especially for us, for broadcast, we're looking for big-marquee auspices" such as those provided by King, Spielberg and their collaborators, Tassler said.

It's a smart move, said one industry analyst.

"It's about time networks put on these types of shows. Cable networks have been exploiting" broadcasting's seasonal weakness, said Brad Adgate of Horizon Media. "Putting on a high-profile series like this in summer is worth the gamble."

Tassler considers "Under the Dome" a safe bet, calling it the kind of escapist fare that "seemed to us to fit nicely as summer programming."

Escapist for viewers, just the opposite for the drama's characters. The premise is adapted from King's 1,000-plus-page book: The town of Chester's Mill (state unspecified) is abruptly enclosed by a mysterious, invisible dome. The residents can't leave and no one can come to their rescue.

How they carry on with daily life trapped in a social "pressure cooker" is the emotional heart of the story.

"Secrets bubble up because there's no place to hide. It's like Sartre's 'No Exit': Three people stuck together in a room, hell for eternity," Baer said, referring to the French writer's 1944 play.

For the people stuck in "Under the Dome," the questions are both existential and practical: "Why us? How are we going to live together, do we have the same government, how long will (the dome) be here, how do we sustain our lives?" he said.

While the premise is fantastical, the show strives to have a sense of realism for "our science-oriented friends and viewers," said Baer, himself a physician whose early entertainment credits include writing for NBC's "ER."

How permeable the dome is to elements including air, water and radio waves will be answered, he promised.

The summer slot allowed for a solid ensemble cast, Baer said. Hiring was done last winter, before other producers and studios had tied up actors for the flood of pilot episodes taped for the 2013-14 season.

Working with the casting directors of "The Walking Dead" and "Breaking Bad," Baer and his fellow producers picked actors including Dean Norris (federal drug agent Hank Schrader on "Breaking Bad") and Rachelle Lefevre ("A Gifted Man").

CBS executive Tassler said there was no arm-twisting to get Spielberg and the other big names to buy into the scheduling.

"At the end of the day, what do creators want? They want to be seen by as many people as possible. They want creative support and marketing support," she said.

Viewing levels (and typically ad rates) drop during the season's longer, warmer days as travel and outdoor activities draw people's attention away from TV sets and mobile devices. But producers who want to cultivate their network ties and opportunities recognize the value in helping expand broadcasting to year-round.

Helping make the business model work: The digital rights were sold to online retailer Amazon, with its Amazon Prime subscribers able to stream episodes four days after CBS airs them and after they stream on CBS.com.

There's no downside to a summer run, Baer said.

"We love it. We love going June 24 to September. There are no interruptions, no repeats. It's very predictable for viewers: You get a dose every week and then you're done," he said.

For now, maybe. While "Under the Dome" is considered a limited-run series in terms of its number of episodes ? a baker's dozen compared with the 22 or so that air during the regular September-to-May season ? that doesn't mean it's one summer and done.

The producers have "such a clear vision of where this show is going. We're prepared for success," Tassler said, confidently. "Under the Dome" could return next summer and there might be a "winter cycle" as well, she said.

That has to send a shiver down the collective spine of imprisoned Chester's Mill.

How cancer cells avoid cell death

June 21, 2013 ? A new study by a team of researchers from the University of Notre Dame provides an important new insight into how cancer cells are able to avoid the cell death process. The findings may suggest a chemotherapeutic approach to prevent the spread of cancers.

Metastasis, the spread of cancer from one organ to other parts of the body, relies on cancer cells ability to evade a cell death process called anoikis, according to Zachary T. Schafer, Coleman Assistant Professor of Cancer Biology at Notre Dame. Metalizing cancer cells are able to survive anoikis, which normally results from detachment from the extracellular matrix. However, Schafer notes that the molecular mechanisms cancer cells detached from the extracellular matrix use to survive has not been well understood.

"This paper reveals that cancer cells that are detached from their normal environment, as they would be during metastasis, relay on the activity of antioxidant enzymes to facilitate their survival," Schafer said. "This class of enzymes is critical for neutralizing oxidative stress and function much like the compounds that are present in a variety of foods."

The paper describes a prominent role for antioxidant enzymes in facilitating the survival of breast cancer cells after detachment from the extracellular matrix. Conversely, the researchers report, silencing antioxidant enzyme expression reduced tumor formation.

"The results in this paper suggest that targeting antioxidant enzymes with novel therapeutics may selectively kill off metastasizing cancer cells," Schafer said.

The paper appears in the journal Cancer Research, which is the most frequently cited cancer journal in the world.

The researchers collaborated with Matthew Leevy in Notre Dame's in vivo imaging facility.

Other authors of the paper include doctoral student Calli Davison, rising junior Sienna Durbin, 2011 alum Matthew Thau, graduate student Victoria Zellmer, and Sarah Chapman, Justin Diner and Connor Wathen from the Notre Dame Integrated Imaging Facility.

What Causes Obesity? Answer May Affect Your Waistline

People's beliefs about what causes obesity may affect their waistlines, according to a new report.

People who named a lack of exercise as the main cause of obesity were more likely to be heavier than those who blamed a poor diet, according to the findings.

"Across multiple studies, we found the first evidence that people generally have two different lay theories about what causes obesity, and that these beliefs impact people's actual likelihood of being overweight," wrote the study authors, led by Brent McFerran, a marketing professor and social psychologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

More than two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While research suggests that ?a sedentary lifestyle and genetics play roles in causing obesity, a large body of scientific evidence points toward overeating as the main culprit, the researchers said.

Many people associate exercising with eating more, McFerran said. "Exercise can be a valid way to lose weight if you can hold food intake constant, but many people struggle to do that."

In the new study, McFerran and his colleagues asked 301 people in South Korea ages 15 to 68 whether they believed the main cause of obesity was eating too much, not exercising enough, or genetics.

About half of the participants said that diet was the main cause of obesity, while about 40 percent implicated a lack of exercise. About 8 percent of people blamed genetics.

Those who said diet was the main cause had an average body mass index (BMI) of 21.55, significantly lower than the average BMI of 23.10 among those who said a lack of exercise was obesity's main cause. (A BMI of 25 or higher is considered overweight, and a BMI of more than 30 designates obesity.)

The researchers also found similar trends among residents of the U.S. and France, suggesting that beliefs about obesity and weight loss are cross-cultural.

In another test in the new study, nearly 100 Hong Kong college students were asked to snack on chocolates while they completed a survey. Researchers "primed" the students prior to the survey by reading a passage about either exercise or eating as the main cause of obesity.

The researchers found that students who were primed with an exercise theory of obesity ate significantly more chocolates than students primed with a diet theory.

The findings show that people's beliefs about what causes obesity can influence eating habits, the researchers said.

"Our results echo a lot of medical research that changing one's diet is a much easier way to shave off calories than going to the gym more often," McFerran said. The study was published this month in the journal Psychological Science.

Though the researchers accounted for some factors that could explain the effects on BMI, such as level of education and age, they can't say for sure whether some other factor played a role in the results.

It's also possible that a person's BMI could affect which theory he or she found more plausible. For instance, trying to lose weight by eating less, but not succeeding, could lead someone to put more stock in exercise as the answer to weight loss.

"This study is an example of how detached we have become from what we eat," said Dr. Mitchell Roslin, chief of weight-loss surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. "We define ourselves by what we do ? as writers, doctors, firemen ? but we each only have one body. We must start defining ourselves by our health."

But Roslin, who was not involved in the study, said the study's usefulness in practice may be limited. "Psychologists have been trying for years to identify an obese personality that could help with behavioral counseling, but this study doesn't do that," he said. "Obesity is very complex. There is no one personality type."

Comey is perhaps best known for a remarkable 2004 standoff over a no-warrant wiretapping program at the hospital bed of Attorney General John Ashcroft. Comey rushed to the side of his bedridden boss to physically stop White House officials in their attempt to get an ailing Ashcroft to reauthorize the program.

If confirmed by the Senate, Comey would serve a 10-year tenure and replace Robert Mueller, who has held the job since the week before the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Mueller is set to resign on Sept. 4 after overseeing the bureau's transformation into one the country's chief weapons against terrorism.

The White House said in a statement that Obama would announce his choice of Comey on Friday afternoon.

Comey was a federal prosecutor who served for several years as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York before coming to Washington after the Sept. 11 attacks as deputy attorney general. In recent years he's been an executive at defense company Lockheed Martin, general counsel to a hedge fund, board member at HSBC Holdings, and lecturer on national security law at Columbia Law School.

The White House may hope that Comey's Republican background and strong credentials will help him through Senate confirmation at a time when some of Obama's nominees have been facing tough battles. Republicans have said they see no major obstacles to his confirmation, although he is certain to face tough questions about his hedge fund work, his ties to Wall Street as well as how he would handle current, high-profile FBI investigations.

The FBI is responsible for both intelligence and law enforcement with more than 36,000 employees. It has faced questions in recent weeks over media leak probes involving The Associated Press and Fox News; the Boston Marathon bombings; the attack at Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans; and two vast government surveillance programs into phone records and online communications.

The leaker of those National Security Agency programs, former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, also is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation. And just this week Mueller revealed the FBI uses drones for surveillance of stationary subjects and said the privacy implications of such operations are worthy of debate.

Comey played a central role in holding up Bush's warrantless wiretapping program, one of the administration's great controversies and an episode that focused attention on the administration's controversial tactics in the war on terror.

In dramatic testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2007, Comey said he thought the no-warrant wiretapping program was so questionable that he refused to reauthorize it while serving as acting attorney general during Ashcroft's hospitalization. Comey said when he learned that the White House chief of staff and counsel were heading to Ashcroft's room despite his wife's instructions that there be no visitors, Comey beat them there and watched as Ashcroft turned them away.

"That night was probably the most difficult night of my professional life," Comey testified. He said he and Ashcroft had reservations about the program's legality, but he would not discuss details since the program was classified.
