Rodgers helps support childhood cancer charity - WLUK Fox 11

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Organizers of a childhood cancer charity say Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has committed to them like few other athletes have.
?? ?
Rodgers has helped the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer Inc., or the MACC Fund, generate $725,000 in net proceeds since 2010. A fundraising dinner Tuesday is expected to increase the total to more than $1 million, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
?? ?
When Rodgers was a 19-year-old quarterback at Butte College, he befriended a young man named Daniel who was stricken with leukemia.
?? ?
"He had a major impact on my life with the struggles he was going through and the struggles his family went through on his behalf, and just the courage that he had," Rodgers said. "I remember making a promise to myself that if I someday had the opportunity and the platform, I was going to try to help all those Daniels out there."
?? ?
Rodgers later heard about the MACC Fund and since 2010 he's been making visits to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, helping to raise money through appearances and events and using his celebrity to increase awareness. He's also done a series a series of touching television commercials.
?? ?
"I have the ability to make a difference because of the platform I've been given," Rodgers said. "The success we've had as a team, the success I've had individually, has given me an opportunity to make a difference in people's lives.
?? ?
"I'm fully aware the MACC Fund started in 1976; it's been around since before I was born and it's going to carry on long after I'm gone. But right now, I have an opportunity to have an impact with my time and my face."
?? ?
MACC Fund president and co-founder Jon McGlocklin said sports connections have always given them an edge.
?? ?
"But as much as a lot of guys have helped and participated, nobody else has committed to the level Aaron has," he said.
?? ?
Rodgers says he gets as much as he gives through his association with the MACC Fund.
?? ?
"It's the top of the mountain for me," Rodgers said. "I try to convey this to the kids and parents: I get just as much or more out of the time I spend with them as they do. It's humbling for me, because I get that exceptional perspective in those moments of what's really important in life - family, friends, quality time.
?? ?
"And again, I'm just one of many. A lot of the amazing people who are associated with the MACC Fund are nameless. They're the doctors and nurses who are giving the treatment and counseling families. They're the real heroes."
?? ?
Since 1976, the nonprofit has contributed $45 million for pediatric cancer and blood disorders research.
