Unable to read hd files in Windows Explorer

i had a hard drive that went wrong. I connected it to another PC as a secondary drive. I could not view the files. The disc showed in Disc Management and the format type said RAW instead of the previous NTFS. I managed to recover all of the photos etc off it by using RECUVA which I got as a free download somewhere on the internet. Very succesful.

I can't remember if I had to initialise it or anything like that.
I can't remember if the disc showed a letter assigned to it.

DO NOT BLAME ME IF IT ALL GOES WRONG but I suspect that Initialising a disc does not wipe any data on it. I think initialising the disc will not hinder Recuva and similar software.
The only way to actually wipe data from a disc is to write over the top of all of that data with other data. A data wiping program will overwrite all of the data with gibberish in it's place. This takes time (length of time depends on disc size) and that is much much much longer than it takes for the Initialising to take place. That's what I think. BUT DO NOT DO IT PURELY ON MY SAY SO. perhaps others can reply to confirm.
