LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Sony Pictures Classics has nabbed North American rights to Woody Allen's next film "Blue Jasmine," continuing the indie label's profitable association with the neurotic auteur.
Sony Pictures previously handled the 2011 stateside rollout for "Midnight in Paris," which became the director's highest-grossing film, earning more than $150 million worldwide and an Oscar for its screenplay. The company also distributed last year's "To Rome With Love," which brought in a more modest $16 million domestically.
Sony Pictures Classics acquired the rights from Gravier Productions. The company did not say when it would be released in theaters.
After a decade or so spent filming his projects in various European locales, "Blue Jasmine" will return Allen to these shores. It has been described as a serious drama, one that centers on a high-society New York housewife in the midst of a crisis, and is being filmed in New York and San Francisco. The cast includes a lot of high-wattage talent such as Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay, Sally Hawkins, Peter Sarsgaard and Michael Stuhlbarg.
